Dalhousie student Liam Hunt decided to put a different spin on the NekNomination drinking game.
Hunt is not the first individual to reframe the new social media craze, which involves individuals posting videos of themselves chugging beer or liquor, into an act of kindness, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from appreciating his positive deed.
Hunt, a second-year political science student, posted a video of his good deed on Facebook last Thursday. The video has since gone viral—at least locally. After purchasing some groceries from a supermarket, Hunt surprised an unsuspecting woman on Spring Garden Road with the food, a beer in the spirit of NekNomination, the jacket off his back and a pair of boots.
Hunt explained the motivation behind his good deed in a written response.
“I did this just for the sake of doing something new, exciting and gratifying. I saw a video of a man doing a similar thing in South Africa, and felt like that was something I’d rather emulate than drink recklessly on camera. Initially I felt great about it, but at the same time I had no idea how it would be received by others; I was really surprised at how quickly it spread. It feels fantastic to see people I’ve never even met who say they were inspired, that’s what it’s all about.”
Hunt’s initial Facebook status has been liked by more than 540 people by mid-day Sunday. The video has been shared over 190 times.
Hunt works as a resident assistant at Risley Hall and as part of the Dalplex event staff.
