Huskies advance to AUS women’s basketball finals with win over Capers

The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team beat the Cape Breton Capers 55-53 in the AUS championship semifinals Saturday afternoon.

The game started at a slow pace, with the Huskies only scoring nine points in the first quarter. They picked things up, however, sinking a total 22 in the last frame. Cape Breton kept pace throughout, swapping leads with the Tigers on several occasions.

Compared to the Huskies regular season games, this one was not their best. Their last two games were great wins, especially the game against St. FX where they won by 17 with a final score of 62-45.

“We are used to it,” said head coach Scott Munro. “We have had about 14 games like this throughout the year, we don’t win pretty. But we try to defend and do a good job executing the game and we are lucky to come out on top. Both teams are well scouted and they know what the other team is going to do and it’s all about who makes the play at the right time.”

The game finally heightened in the fourth. Angelina Carvery sunk three in the last frame and had a great opportunity to score on the foul line. Carvery missed both shots, allowing Cape Breton’s Primossi Valentina to score in transition.

“It was kind of anxious but we expected it,” said Carvery. “We had a close game with them every time we played with them this year, so we didn’t expect anything less.”

Carvery, who had a game-high 22 points, was named player of the game.

“I feel like it’s just like any other game, you just have to go out there and play. It doesn’t matter that it is the AUS championship, you always have to give 100 per cent,” said Carvery.

With the finals coming up Sunday, Munro says he knows his team will be ready.

“PEI and Dal are both good teams and we beat both during the regular season and we lost to both so it’s going to be a good final whoever we play against.”
