The least fun use of a movie theatre?

Second-year Dalhousie engineering students will be taking morning classes at the Park Lane Empire Theatres cinema on Spring Garden Road because of a lack of space on campus.

For desks, there are trays that attach to the cup-holders, and the movie screen displays slides as with a projector system in a university lecture hall. Renting the theatre costs Dal about $54,000 a year.

The engineering school hopes to construct a new building on Sexton campus. However, it has not raised the estimated $20-$30 million which it needs to do so.

With enrollment at Dal continuing to increase, including in the faculty of engineering, the use of off-campus facilities may prove necessary for the next few years.

Alex Fountain lecturer announced

The University of King’s College has announced that philosopher Charles Taylor will deliver the 2012 Alex Fountain Memorial Lecture, to be held on Nov. 6.

Taylor, who may be best known for his communitarian critique of modern liberalism’s conception of identity, has written 15 books, including The Secular Age,  Sources of the Self and The Malaise of Modernity.

The first Alex Fountain Memorial Lecture, held last year, was delivered by former Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
