Recruits impress against Saint Mary’s and Acadia
The Tigers women’s soccer team remained scoreless through its first two games of preseason on Sept. 1.
Dalhousie played two shortened 50-minute games, losing 1-0 to a young Saint Mary’s side and drawing with Acadia 0-0.
“Some people are stepping up, some people are not quite where we expect them to be,” said Dal coach Jack Hutchison after the second game.
The Tigers looked better, if somewhat more tired, in their win against Acadia. Rookies Kristy McGregor-Bales and high school scoring phenom Doriana Homerski both had excellent afternoons.
Hutchison put some of the sloppy play from the other Tigers down to nerves. Defensive mistakes and rushed direct-style play featured throughout the evening.
Torontonian goalkeeping recruit Shannon Junor and full-back Megan Willox of Calgary also impressed against Amit Batra’s Acadia team. Junor controlled the box well and Hutchison said she’ll benefit from goalkeeping coaching with Dal assistant coach Gary Carter, and hinted she may even challenge second-year goalkeeper Taryn McKenna in time.
The Tigers open their season Sat, Sept. 10 against UPEI at 1 p.m.
