Dalhousie University sports events to catch this 2024-25 season

It’s September, which means the Dalhousie Tigers are  back in action. With so many different Tigers sports to keep track of, you might not remember everything that happened last year and the rivalries to keep an eye on.

But with rivalry games being the most exciting to see and some dominant seasons expected from some of the Dal teams, here are the dates you need to know if you want to see the best Tigers action this year.

Atlantic University Sports men’s

For men’s basketball, the home opener on Nov. 1 is bound to be a big game. Just their second game of the season, Dal will be playing the St. Francis Xavier X-Men, the only team to finish ahead of them in the regular season standings last year.

After getting beat by Dal in the AUS championship at Scotiabank Centre in overtime last season, StFX is going to want to show up and show out for their first game back in Halifax, which should make for a close game against the Tigers.

Unlike their basketball counterparts, the Dal men’s hockey team hasn’t been one to make or win the finals in recent years.

While they were in the running for one of the bottom playoff spots last season, the team fell short once again, with Acadia University stretching the margin between the teams to seven points by the end of the season.

A team with some young talent itching for success, you’ll want to tune in to their first game of the new year on Jan. 6, 2025, when they welcome the Axemen to the Halifax Forum and fight it out with their closest competitor from last season.

AUS women’s

A crosstown rival and a consistently strong team, the Saint Mary’s Huskies are bound to get under the skin of the Dal Tigers women’s hockey team this season.

Last season, the Huskies sent the Tigers home from the playoffs quickly, with two back to back shutout games in the quarterfinal. That quarterfinal loss made for Dal’s third straight first round exit, a trend they’re not going to want to continue..

Outside of the preseason,  Oct. 25 is the first chance to see the Tigers up against the Huskies, hoping to come out of this game with a better result than in the playoffs.

A team already well into their season, the Dal women’s soccer team is also not in favour of a repeat, looking to make this season resemble their 2022 season rather than 2023. The team fell short of their own expectations last year, losing to the Memorial University of Newfoundland in penalty kicks in the quarterfinal.

Having been bested in the 2022 final by Cape Breton University and narrowly losing their first game to the Capers earlier this September, the game to watch out for is the Tigers home game against CBU on Oct. 18.

Their second last game of the season, Dal will be preparing for the playoffs and trying to show the best team of the past decade that they’re a team to watch out for.

Club sports

Disappointed by not winning it all last season, the division one Dal men’s rugby team ended with very few losses and nothing to show for it.

Losing to the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the Atlantic Championship Final and the University of New Brunswick Ironmen in the Maritime Final, the Tigers are going to be thinking extra hard about those crucial games this season.

Looking for a comeback, the Tigers will be facing UNB at home again on Oct. 26, hoping to take home a trophy this time.

The Dalhousie sailing team will also be looking to come back strong this season, narrowly losing at the 2023 Fleet Race Nationals they hosted last November.

Unfortunately, the only regatta being hosted by Dal has passed, but avid sailing fans will want to keep their eyes on their phones during this year’s Fleet Racing Nationals being hosted at Pointe-Claire Yacht Club in Quebec.

Falling short last season, the Tigers completely dominated the sailing scene in 2022 and are going to want to show their rivals, namely McGill University and Queen’s University, that they’re not easily beat.
