Catch up with Dal’s Tigers

A recap of the 22/23 season for some of Dal’s biggest sports

From intense playoff matches to national championships, the Tigers accomplished a lot last year.

Tennis

The Dalhousie Tennis team had a successful season, winning the Atlantic University Tennis League last March. Both the men’s and women’s teams played in the Canadian University Tennis Championships this August in Montreal.

The men’s team lost their semifinal to the University of Alberta, as well as their third place match to Western University. The women’s team lost their semifinal to Western and their third place match to McGill University.

Regardless, both Tigers teams will be the teams to beat in the Atlantic league for this upcoming season.

Swimming

The Dal men’s and women’s swim teams came first overall in the Atlantic University Sports (AUS) division, as they have since 1999 and 2002, respectively.

Reagan Crowell, then a fourth-year Tiger, won Swimmer of the Year award while Lance Cansdale won Coach of the Year for his work with the Tigers.

During the Tigers off-season, Noah Mascoll-Gomes, who swam the 50m men’s freestyle last year, competed in the 2023 Caribbean and Central American Games on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda. Mascoll-Gomes placed 7th in his heat with a time of 53.08, 25th overall, for the men’s 100m freestyle.

Volleyball

Last season, the women’s volleyball team saw great success, winning the AUS Championship against Acadia. It was a close match that came down to the fifth set, but the Tigers were able to make last season their 10th AUS Championship in a row

The team went off to Nationals in British Columbia, where they won bronze. The team’s first game this season will be on Oct. 28.

The men’s volleyball team finished fourth in the RSEQ but lost their semifinal match to Université de Sherbrooke, who went on to win the final. Their first game this season will be on Oct. 20, where they will come head to head with Sherbrooke for the first time since their loss.

Basketball

The men’s basketball team didn’t make it as far as they wanted to last year, losing their semifinal game to University of Prince Edward Island. Prior to last season, Dal had won six out of the seven most recent AUS championships.

Recently, the team hosted an NCAA team for the first time and played the University of Indianapolis in a pre-season game. The Tigers lost 118-104

The women’s basketball team came last in the standings last year, winning one four-point game in the 20 game season.

The men’s and women’s teams will both play their first games of their respective seasons on Oct. 27.

Hockey

The women’s hockey team placed fifth in the AUS last season. The team made the playoffs but was defeated by UPEI, losing their quarterfinal series 2-1

The Tigers were shutout in games one and three but put up an impressive fight in game two to win 4-3 in double overtime. Their 2023/24 season begins on Oct. 4.

The men’s hockey team came last in the AUS last season with a record of six wins, 22 losses, one overtime loss and one shootout loss (6-22-1-1). The team’s first game this season will be on Oct. 6.
