Society Support Commissioner positions open
The DSU is currently looking for two Society Support Commissioners.
The responsibilities of this role include acting as a communications liason between student societies and the rest of the DSU, connecting societies to resources and providing the union with recommendations on how societies can be better supported.
The term is from Jan. 8, 2015 until April 2015, and the job pays $500. The deadline for application is Jan. 5, 2015. You can find more information here.

Campus Food Commissioner positions open
There are two Campus Food Commissioner positions open.
The job’s responsibilities include collecting feedback on and creating a report on the status of DSU food services.
The term is from January 8, 2015 until April 2015, and the job pays $500. You have until Jan. 5, 2015 to apply. You can find more information here.

Carleton Campus Director position opens
In the most recent report of the DSU’s Executive Review Committee, the DSU executives were given a ranking of one out of five for their performance in communicating with Carleton Campus.
The position of Carleton Campus Director, which pays $500, is now available. Whoever hold this position will be responsible for “representing all Carleton students to DSU”, coordinating events on Carleton campus and developing a Carleton Campus Advisory Committee.

Three assistants to DSU president hired
DSU President Ramz Aziz’s executive report for the council meeting of Dec. 5 announced the DSU has hired three “Executive Project Commissioners”.
These positions were only once advertised (in a Twitter post) by the DSU, and this was only after the Gazette asked them why it had not been advertised after we discovered these positions were available when there were only two days were left to apply.
The positions were originally listed as paying $1,000 over two semesters, but now the positions will begin in January. The agenda says the positions will have reduced honoraria because of this, but does not say how much the positions pay.
The successful applicants were Ayesha Kottapalli, Brandon Randall and John Hutton. Hutton is a Board of Governors representative on DSU council.
Aziz’s report says these new DSU staff members will be assigned projects including “a feedback Strategy, Emergency Bursary Program, Wagemark Certification, Staff Handbook Review, Policy Drafting”.
Policy and Research Coordinator hired
Though this hasn’t yet been announced outside of the council meeting of Nov. 19, the DSU has hired Kaley Kennedy as their Policy and Research Coordinator.
Kennedy has previously held prominent positions within the Dal community including President of the King’s Student Union and Opinions Editor of the Gazette.
No information on the roles, responsibilities or expectations of the Policy and Research Coordinator position is currently available on DSU.ca.
Budget Commissioner applications close without position ever being advertised
During a bi-weekly check of what jobs the DSU is hiring for that they have not advertised, the Gazette learned at 10 p.m. yesterday the hiring period has already ended for the position of Budget Commissioner, while this position was never once advertised by the DSU.
This position – with an honorarium of $500 – includes important responsibilities like consulting students on how the DSU should prioritize its budget, preparing a report based off these consultations and assisting the current Vice President (Finance and Operations) [VPFO] in preparing a new budget.
This position’s applications period ending without ever being advertised stands in stark contrast to the DSU’s recent vote to have the position of VPFO be elected instead of appointed.
Those who have been following the Gazette’s DSU coverage may remember the union held a General Meeting on Oct. 23 to amend their constitution so the position of VPFO would be elected, rather than hired after being appointed by members of council.
The decision to have the VPFO be elected came after councillor Hutton put forward a motion suggesting the amendment, saying the motion reflects principles including “promoting student democracy and promoting accountability and transparency.”
The Gazette asked the DSU a series of questions over Twitter yesterday night regarding the position. As of publication, we have not heard back.

Divestment commissioner to be hired this week
The DSU has told the Gazette the hiring period for the paid staff position of Divestment Commissioner is happening this week.
Outside of brief mentions in president Ramz Aziz’s executive reports in October and November council meetings, a single advertisement in the Gazette in late October and through multiple reports by the Gazette, there was no way general Dalhousie students would have known the DSU was hiring a Divestment Commissioner.
The position of Divestment Commissioner, paying $1,000 for a semester of work, appeared on the DSU’s hiring site in mid-October.
When the Gazette asked DSU Vice President (Internal) Jennifer Nowoselski at the town hall on divestment why the position had not been advertised outside of a single ad in the Gazette, Nowoselski said she did not have an answer.

In the process of applying for any of the DSU’s jobs, the first page of the online application form you are presented with poses the question: “How did you hear about this position?”
Your options are: Campus Video Screen Ads, Career Beacon, Craig’s List, Current Employee, Dal Career Services, Email from DSU, Facebook, Friend, Kijiji, Other and Posters.
For the position of Budget Commissioner, the only options you could have ever chosen with honesty would have been “Friend”, “Current Employee” or “Other”.
