A taste of pro at home

Seven Dalhousie University Tigers men’s soccer team members were named to the U23 Halifax Wanderers squad this summer. Goalkeeper Aiden Rushenas, defenders Connor Manuel and Benjamin Bruce, midfielder Ayoub Al-Arabi, and strikers Luke Berryman, Mykeo Parker-Christmas and Suliman Elomrani repped the Tigers with the newly-formed Wanderers youth squad.

It has been a remarkable season for the Dalhousie University Tigers men’s hockey team’s Shaun Miller. Starting with a three-point performance in his second game of the regular season, the 5-foot-11 rookie has continued this success. As of Feb. 23, he sits ninth in points (22) and fifth in assists (16) in Atlantic University Sport (AUS).

Sam Maillet’s mix of passing, defending and basketball IQ has been outstanding. His ability to guard all positions as a six-foot-five guard gives the team an unmatched defensive versatility. Ranking third in the AUS in steals-per-game (2.0) and second in blocks-per-game (1.2), his versatility is clear.

Julie Moore has been nothing but sensational throughout the 2021-2022 season, ranking second in points per set and kills per set in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s volleyball. She’s certainly put a lot of work into becoming one of the conference’s most dangerous players. But over the past couple of years, more of that work has been building herself up into a leadership role.

Tigers basketballer represents Germany at FIBA 3×3 U23 Nations League

The Dalhousie University Tigers received some unique representation on the world basketball stage over the summer. Kentzler, from the women’s basketball team, suited up for Germany in the FIBA 3×3 U23 Nations League in July and August. The Gottingen, Germany native’s team played in the Europe 1 conference this summer, which was played across six different stops –– separate locations where a portion of the season’s games are played ––over two months.

U SPORTS said senior-aged student-athletes could retain their final year of eligibility due to the cancelled season at the hands of COVID-19. Many Dalhousie University Tigers athletes chose to stay in school through the 2021-2022 season to redeem it.

Playing a new game

Every year, coaches are tasked with finding ways to get the best out of their athletes. Coaching through the COVID-19 pandemic at Dalhousie University has presented several challenges to that mission. Many coaches felt coaching this year was tougher without many games being played. Some Nova Scotia universities, including Dal, began playing some exhibition games in early February 2021. But then new provincial COVID-19 restrictions, announced on Feb. 26, shut down games again.
