Dal Baseball Club shafted on playoff spot

The Dalhousie Tigers baseball club missed out on the playoffs this year because of a league decision to award the Acadia Axemen two wins for rained out games.

The Tigers were sitting in fourth place, good for the final playoff spot in the CCBA Atlantic Division with a 7-7 record, until the Axemen were given the two wins, making their official record 8-6.

The Axemen were supposed to play two makeup games against the StFX X-men. Yet when the teams were unable to find a time to play the games, the Axemen were gifted the wins and a spot in the playoffs by the CCBA.

“It’s a tough thing to deal with,” said Tigers player/coach Jake Boyle. “We feel like we should have had a chance to play [the Axemen] for the spot in the playoffs. Based on the rules of the league, we feel that we got screwed.”

The Tigers sent in an appeal to overturn the decision citing the league’s constitution, but the appeal was denied.

“I don’t think the process played out like it should have,” said Boyle. “We followed the rules in making our appeal, it’s disappointing the way it turned out.”

Though the league’s decision is a lousy way to end the season, the team knows that at the end of the day they would be in if they had won more games.

“There were a few games this year we felt like we should’ve won,” said Boyle. “We feel like we’re a better team than our record shows.”

Consistency on the mound and in the field was the biggest issue for the Tigers this year. The Tigers went 6-0 when holding teams to fewer than ten runs this season and 0-5 when they gave up ten or more.

Swinging hot sticks was the key ingredient for the success this Tigers team had in 2015.

“We had some guys hit really well this year,” said Boyle. “We got contributions from everyone in the lineup and thought we had a shot against anyone.”
