Attendance weak at DSU council meetings

New councillors fill vacant positions while some councillors are frequently absent

A Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) councillor was recalled for absences at the Nov. 19 meeting of council, while other councillors have been habitually missing council meetings, and new councillors have taken on vacant positions.

Two new residence representatives were announced at this meeting. Scott Rairdon and Tiana Dumarovsky filled the previously-vacant seats.

Shortly after the beginning of this meeting, Dalhousie Arts and Social Sciences Society Chair William Coney questioned the attendance records of certain councillors to Chair Andrew Christofi.

The DSU’s constitution includes a clause saying that pending the chair’s discretion, any member of council who fails to attend two council meetings without providing reasonable excuse shall automatically be declared recalled when anyone at a council meeting brings this to the chair’s attention.

Coney’s questioning resulted in Computer Science representative Kristofer Pervin being recalled from council for missing too many meetings without informing the chair.

Other than Pervin, six other councillors were absent from this meeting without informing the chair.

The other missing councillors were:

  • Taylor Quinn, Senate Rep
  • Andrew Bucci, Graduate Senate Rep
  • Michael Davies-Cole, Black Students Rep
  • Sydney Miller, Engineering Diploma Rep
  • Aaron Szeto and Uytae Lee, who interchangeably are the Architecture Rep
  • Charlotte Dickie and Thomas Steeves, who are interchangeably the Dentistry Rep

Only Derek Rodger, DalOUT rep, was absent while giving regrets in advance.

Dec. 5, 2014: five councillors missing without giving notice

Ten councillors were absent from this council meeting with notice given, and five were absent without giving notice. Approximately four councillors were represented by proxies.

Councillors who sent in regrets:

  • Ramz Aziz, President
  • Rebecca Haworth, Board of Governors Representative
  • Derek Rodgers, DalOUT Rep
  • Sara Swasson, Aboriginal Students Representative
  • Jomel Varghese, Sexton Campus Director
  • Christine Rankin, Dalhousie Arts and Social Sciences Vice President (Internal)
  • Hannah Klug, Dalhousie Undergraduate Engineering Society Rep
  • Mackenzie Arnold, Management Rep
  • Naznin Sultana, Dalhousie Association of Graduate Students President
  • Vishwa Patel, Dalhousie Association of Graduate Students Representative

Councillors who didn’t give advance notice:

  • Andrew Bucci, Graduate Senate Representative
  • Michael Davies-Cole, Black Students Representative
  • Amr ElKhashab, International Students Representative
  • Sydney Miller, Engineering Diploma Rep
  • Aaron Szeto and Uytae Lee, who are interchangeably the Architecture Rep

This meeting marked the first appearance of the new Computer Science representative, Raphael Bronfman-Nadas. It would have been the first appearance of Sara Swasson, the new Aboriginal Students representative, but she was not present for the meeting.

This was the second consecutive meeting where Andrew Bucci, Sydney Miller, Michael Davies-Cole and Aaron Szeto and Uytae Lee were absent without giving notice in advance.

Due to a family matter, DSU President Ramz Aziz had been out of town for over ten days before this meeting, but this was never announced outside of the agenda for this council meeting.
