Halifax protesters rally against provincial budget cuts

Province reversed $53.6M in grant cuts on March 10

Protestors rallied at Premier Tim Houston’s front doorstep on March 10 to voice their concerns about the provincial government’s 2026-27 budget, announced on Feb. 23.

Despite the budget’s projected $1.2 billion deficit, over $300 million in cuts were made to address the province’s nearly $28 billion debt.

Cuts included over 1,000 full-time jobs in the public sector and $130 million from 287 discretionary grants to climate change initiatives, student scholarships and health programs.

Just over $53 million in grant cuts affecting seniors, people with disabilities and African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students were reversed on the morning of March 10, before the rally.
