It was a comeback win for Alberta against Ontario in Friday night’s bronze medal match up as they won 5 – 3 at the Metro Centre.
“To come back down 3 – 2 in the third period really meant a lot us,” said Alberta starting goalie Eric Comrie. “It was the pride of our province. We have never not won a medal so we knew we had to be rooting the guys together and win this game.”
Ontario, who were expected to be a gold medal favourite this tournament, will go home empty handed with a fourth place finish.
“We came here to win gold,” said Max Domi, son of former Toronto Maple Leafs player Tie Domi. “So it’s disappointing to not win a medal, but we built a lot of strong and long lasting relationships. It was a great experience.”
David Perklin opened the scoring for Ontario. He shot from the left side of the crease, high glove side on Comrie. 12:26 into the period Ontario’s Bo Horvat made it 2 – 0 after he tucked in his own rebound. Just 16 seconds later Alberta’s Cole Ully cut the the lead in half. Both Ontario and Alberta added another goal before the period was over.
It was a scoreless second period.
“We just kept saying keep throwing the pucks on net and the pucks are going to go in, bounces are going to go our way,” said Comrie.
Two goals by Torrin White and a goal by Morgan Klimchuk completed the comeback for Alberta.
“I am not going to lie, I thought we played well,” said Domi. “It was just a couple of bad bounces that went to the back of our net and they sort of capitalized.”
