Men’s basketball narrowly drops season opener
As a debut performance for a fresh-faced Dalhousie program, it was a respectable outing.
A new look Tigers which was gutted this offseason, graduating a number of instrumental players, held the Acadia Axemen but would not earn the victory they wanted Nov 9. The Tigers were defeated 71 – 68 in their home opener in front of a few hundred fans at the Dalplex.
Dal was a basket away from tying after a foolish five second throw-in violation by the Axemen gave the Tigers the ball with 8.9 seconds left in the game. Tigers guard Stephen Lopez was handed the ball off the inbound but could not get a clean shot off, leaving Acadia with the victory.
The reigning AUS champion Tigers played well throughout the match, keeping the Axemen on their toes. Dal was often a few points away from the better side of the scoreline until the third quarter when they held the advantage for much of the frame.
The home team received 17 points from Robert Nortmann. Four other players had 10 or more. The Axemen were led by impressive rookie C. Tyler Scott and his 23 points.
