Tough words ahead of res hockey game

This weekend the Howe Hall Trojans and Risley Bighorns head to residence battle once again in the Charity Face-off event at Memorial Arena.

The game brings together all residences on campus to celebrate sport and support the IWK. The hockey game is a marquee event in a long list of residence events throughout the school year.

This year will be the fourth time that Joe Garnett, a residence assistant and former Fountain Hall President, will be involved in the game, “I’ve played three times and coached once, the reason I keep coming back is that it’s an important event for both the community and the students who live in the buildings.

“It gives students something to rally behind and helps build pride and spirit in the building and is really the highlight of the residence calendar.

“It’s not just about winning the game, of course that’s what we’re trying to do, but it’s about bringing students together to help a charitable cause and have fun while doing it.”

Last year saw a large number of alumni turn up to support both sides and Howe Hall president Gordo Fraser is hoping the trend continues.

“We saw an increase in fan support last year and want to see that continue. From my side of things, we want a loud crowd to help stir our team on to victory and continue where we left off in our 7 – 0 soccer win in the fall.”

After the Howe soccer win, Risley president Alex Hallink said that the important event was the hockey game, saying the Big Horns would win when it mattered.

While each residence fundraises for the event, there are always raffle prizes at the game and this year the teams are giving away an iPad and a signed Jay Bouwmeester jersey for those Calgary Flames fans out there.

Tickets are available at the SUB info desk for $7.00 and are $10.00 at the door. The puck drops Saturday night at 6:30 p.m..
