U Sports opening transfer doors for athletes
Canadian university sports adapt for student athletes
A major shift is coming to Canadian university athletics.
Beginning in the 2026-27 season, U Sports will allow varsity student athletes to transfer schools and be eligible to compete for their new university immediately. The NCAA implemented a similar rule in 2024.
Previously, non-graduating players were required to sit out for a year from their last date of competition after transferring. Under the new rule, only first and second-year students are eligible to transfer schools without a waiting period before returning to competition.
In a Sept. 16 news release, Pierre Arsenault, U Sports CEO, said the new system allows students at the start of their academic careers to find the academic and athletic program that fits them best.
“This is an important step forward for U SPORTS and our student-athletes,” Arsenault says. “The landscape of post-secondary sport is evolving, and our role is to ensure our policies reflect the needs of those we serve.”
Though the rule change won’t come into effect until next year, Dalhousie University is already preparing for the new measure.
Tim Maloney, Dalhousie’s assistant vice-president of athletics and ancillary services, says that he was initially hesitant about the new rule change, but came around after considering the opportunities it could provide for varsity athletes.
“I think this is a good way to dip our toe into the water with respect to unencumbered transfers,” Maloney says. “Our job is to try and create the very best environment possible for a student athlete.”
